OUR HISTORY

A great history behind the walls of our restaurant.

Mercaderes Restaurant, is a place where the two cultures that gave origin to our Historic Center, meet.

The building where, nowadays is found Mercaderes Restaurant, lies where once was the home of Tlahtoani Moctezuma and afterward the encampment of Hernán Cortés.

During the colonial time, it was one of the most economical important places, due to week to week, the traders of the capital came to offer their merchandise at “Los Portales de los Mercaderes”.

The continuing use of the building over the years, tells us about stables, storehouses, and guesthouses.

The retail trading has remained through centuries, continuing with one of the most beautiful traditions of our Historic Center.

This is how the name Mercaderes prevails, doing credit to our ancestors.

Don Porfirio Díaz,   expropriates the land and orders to trace the streets that would lead to the Zócalo, giving origin to Mecateros Street, which in the end, would become 5 de Mayo Street.

FOUNDATION OF MERCAREDES RESTAURANT

On February 1998, Mercaderes Restaurant opens its doors thanks to the vision of three national´s gastronomy experimented businessmen , who were aware of  the lack of a place in the Historic Center of the city where Mexican Haute Cuisine could be tasted, accompanied by a good glass of wine.

That’s how they decided to rescue this beautiful historic building, adapting it and remodeling it with the intention to respect and keep intact the remains of the customs of colonial time.

As witnesses of this preservation desire, there are four telamon columns holding the front of the Cantabrian building, as well as the stony water filters that were found in the excavations and which nowadays are exhibited at the interior of the restaurant. They also prevail a few volcanic stone walls.

The decoration of the place has been carefully chosen to preserve the lordly atmosphere with traditional vaults. In contrast with the public areas, the operational areas are gifted with modern facilities and equipment, needed for the high-quality functioning of the kitchens.

Since its beginnings, Mercaderes Restaurant has promoted Mexican haute cuisine and national wine culture in an exceptional environment, giving an approximate monthly service to 5,000 diners.

Our quality has made us worthy of the following certifications and recognitions: in 2013, the Secretary of Tourism, gave us the nomination of Mexico´s Treasures www.tesorosdemexico.com.mx/restaurantes/restaurante-mercaderes-enoteca/ which certifies our gastronomic proposal, constituted of 80% of Mexican Haute Cuisine dishes.
